Artist & Extrovert
Catharsis.
I started this body of work in Spring of 2020...and it's not quite done yet. In March of 2022, I had a one-man show in Charlotte and was able to record where I was at this point in time.
Special thanks to Michael Reynolds (a.k.a. DJ Starseed) at Star Flower Productions, for producing this.
Enjoy the video.
Artist Statement.
The universe is comprised of moving parts - interconnected and synchronous. As humans, we long to be part of this harmony, but the emotional burdens we carry can keep us from achieving our goals. Periodically there must be a catharsis that allows us to regurgitate, reconfigure, and re-contextualize our lives in place and time. Drawing, allows me the opportunity to connect the broken and unused pieces of life that accumulate into something new and meaningful.

Catharsis: 2020 - 2023
Series origin: As it did for the rest of the world, the Covid-19 pandemic created an alternate reality in my life, changing patterns of a lifetime. It allowed me the time to take nature walks, where I could examine roots and rock formations. More than that, it provided the space to clean out the “junk drawers” in my home and in my mind, creating a unique opening through which my art could flourish.
My style has always been to utilize complexity and attention to detail. In my latest work, I use the connections between random pieces of “junk” to form a portrait and, within the portrait, reference events of the subject’s life. This has been my therapy for the past year, an attempt to be positive, creating order out of chaos, beauty out of discarded items, through a difficult time in history.
Materials and process: These images are all 11” x14”, drawn on Strathmore Bristol 300 series (100 lb) paper using Prismacolor Ebony graphite pencils. I typically start by sketching out the subject and then meticulously detail the work from top to bottom, and left to right - trying not to smear as I go. The only other tools I use are a Tombow eraser, a clear ruler as a straightedge, an adjustable rotary circle template, and a very trusty industrial electronic pencil sharpener. As of 2021, I have been using a Kimberly 9XXB graphite pencil to really make the darks darker. Currently I am investigating the use of black watercolor to get the backgrounds and recesses even darker.
Once finished, each image is professionally photographed, and then colorized in Photoshop to add a metal gray hue for the final print composition. Each print is 16” x 20” with a one-inch border on all four sides to allow for matting and framing. Each print is a limited edition - only 10 or 25 of each will be printed.
