I was born a year before we landed on the moon, ending the great Space Race to the moon. So, I barely remember how important that was to our history as humans. But the sacrifice that others made, especially during the Apollo mission that ended in 3 deaths, had an impact on me as a child.
In 1981, I was completely blown away by MTV. I watched it for hours. The iconic astronaut that planted the flag along with the MTV theme music gave me chills. I also watched a pirated VHS tape of “Heavy Metal” about the same time. The astronaut in the Corvette was so cool! This era in music, animation and film had an impact on me as a teenager.
Today, I watch quietly as we are now entering another great Space Race to Mars. Privatization of space exploration will inevitably lead to the ultimate sacrifice of someone yet to be determined. And, I am sure it will have an impact on all of us when it happens.
